Mandraki Beach Resort

An adults-only five-star retreat in sheltered Mandraki Bay, with a sandy beach, polished restaurant, private-pool suites and complimentary arrival transfer by boat.

Our take

Hydra’s rare full-service stay directly on sand

Mandraki Beach Resort occupies a category of its own on car-free Hydra: it is a true luxury hotel on the island’s only sandy shore. The sheltered bay lies one cove east of town, reached by a three-minute sea taxi or an attractive 20-minute waterfront walk. Guests receive a complimentary boat transfer for arrival and departure, then settle into rooms and suites that face sea, garden or mountain; the upper categories add a private pool. Sunbeds and parasols are included on the beach, breakfast is cooked to order, and Captain M serves ambitious Greek-Mediterranean food from lunch into the evening. Reception and room service run around the clock.

This is an expensive retreat rather than an easy town base. There is no communal swimming pool, so only the corresponding suites have one, and spontaneous evenings around Hydra harbour depend on walking or arranging a boat. The resort accepts guests from age 16, which rules it out for most families, and its serene beach becomes livelier when day visitors and restaurant diners arrive. Some transport beyond the complimentary arrival and departure service may cost extra or depend on availability. Expedia’s 9.8 score comes from only 16 reviews, so the sample is still young, but it leads Hydra’s adults-only beachfront category. Book it for sand, swimming and staying put, not for repeatedly dipping into town.
