The Petra

A deeply personal small hotel above Grikos Bay, with spacious sea-view suites, a jewel-like pool and exceptional food shaped by three generations of family hospitality.

Our take

A tiny Grikos retreat where the kitchen has a memory

The Petra has spent more than three decades proving that intimacy can be more luxurious than scale. Its small collection of rooms and suites rises above Grikos Bay, with pale interiors, private terraces and views across the water towards the great rock of Kalikatsou. The family remains visibly involved, and that continuity gives the service uncommon warmth and confidence. Breakfast is not a forgettable buffet: recipes developed by founder Petra Stergiou still shape the kitchen, which also serves a compact dinner menu and thoughtful local wines. Suites with separate living rooms make a longer stay or a family visit considerably more comfortable.

This is a small hotel in the literal sense. The pool is lovely but narrow, shaded lounging space is limited, and there is no large spa, gym or beach club. Grikos has a few good places to eat but not the choice of Skala, and taxis or a hire vehicle are useful for repeated trips to Chora and the port. Some terraces trade a completely open outlook for greater privacy, so compare room plans rather than choosing by name alone. The Petra is Patmos’s best owner-led boutique stay for travellers who value food, conversation and quiet detail over a long facilities list.
