Eastern Crete works as a story of landscape and deep time. Heraklion supplies the island’s essential archaeological museum; Knossos and Archanes place Minoan life in context; Mirabello Bay changes the pace; Sitia makes the long road to Zakros or Vai sensible. Eight days calls for three bases and disciplined choices.

Before booking

Fly into Heraklion and out of Heraklion or Sitia if the schedule is robust. Do not promise yourself both Vai and Zakros on one short far-east day. Reserve a car from the end of the city stay and confirm whether the hotel has legal parking.

Days 1–2: Heraklion

See the Archaeological Museum before Knossos if possible; the objects make palace architecture much easier to read. Walk the Venetian walls and harbour, then reserve Peskesi for a meal grounded in Cretan agriculture and historical recipes.

Day 3: Knossos and Archanes

Enter Knossos early with an accredited guide, then move to Archanes for lunch and a slower afternoon. A winery visit must be booked and the driver should not taste. Sleep in Heraklion or Archanes rather than adding an evening drive east.

Days 4–5: Mirabello Bay

Move to Agios Nikolaos or Elounda, pausing at Malia only if another palatial centre genuinely interests you. Use the next day for the bay, Spinalonga through a licensed operator, or a quiet hotel day. Do not stack all three.

Days 6–7: Sitia and the far east

Continue to Sitia and choose one full east-Crete objective. Vai offers palms and an organised beach; Zakros combines a Minoan palace with a remote valley; a village-and-food route asks less driving. The far east deserves a base, not an out-and-back from Elounda.

Day 8: Departure route

Leave according to the actual airport. A Heraklion flight requires a substantial drive and should not follow a morning at Zakros. If the flight is early, return west the previous day and remove one Sitia night.

What to reserve

  • First: archaeological entry, car and the open-jaw flight if used.
  • Next: a Knossos guide, winery and any Spinalonga boat.
  • Keep flexible: Vai or Zakros, chosen for weather and energy.
  • Protect: the final road transfer with more time than a navigation app’s minimum.
