Test the images of the Exodus against paintings, engravings and objects collected in the old town hall
The museum gives visual form to events commemorated throughout the city. Original works and later copies show how Greek and European artists imagined the sieges and the 1826 Exodus, while portraits of fighters and philhellenes identify people behind the collective story. Weapons, coins, medals, 1837 Friedel engravings and items associated with Lord Byron add physical evidence. Comparing contemporary material with later heroic imagery is more useful than accepting every painting as eyewitness record.
The gallery occupies the 1931 former town hall on Markos Botsaris Square and needs about an hour. Current schedules listed online differ, so use the municipality's page or call before arriving, particularly around commemorations. Ask about lift or step-free access in this older civic building. Photography rules may vary by object. Visit after the Garden of Heroes, when names and scenes are already familiar, and leave time for the nearby pedestrian centre.
