Augustus’ victory city spread beyond modern Preveza
Nicopolis was created by Augustus to commemorate victory at Actium, and its scale reflects an imperial foundation rather than an older hill town. Monuments are distributed across a wide area: city walls, odeion, theatres, stadium, baths and early Christian basilicas cannot all be understood from one parking place.
Start at the archaeological museum to choose a realistic circuit and confirm which sectors are open. A car is essential, while heat and road crossings make an improvised midday visit frustrating. Base in Preveza and reserve half a day. The nearby Actium landscape adds context, but the naval battle is not visible simply by standing on one shore.
