The sanctuary where competition became a shared Greek institution
Olympia is both sanctuary and sports landscape. The route passes the gymnasium and palaestra, temples of Hera and Zeus, Philippeion, workshop of Pheidias and the vaulted entrance to the stadium. Its scale only becomes clear when the museum’s architectural sculpture and bronzes are viewed alongside the ground from which they came.
Stay nearby and enter early; midday heat and tour groups can flatten a site that needs three to four hours across archaeology and museum. The ground is mostly gentle but distances accumulate. Olympia lies far west of the Argolid, so place it before or after Messinia rather than driving out and back from Nafplio. Confirm separate museum and site hours in shoulder season.
