ARCTUROS Bear Conservation Area

The ARCTUROS enclosure outside Nymfaio houses rescued bears that cannot return to the wild, with guided visits centred on welfare and coexistence.

Our take

Rescued bears observed through the work of a conservation organisation

This is the most important reason many visitors come to Nymfaio, but expectations matter. ARCTUROS provides a wooded home for bears rescued from captivity or other conditions that prevent release. A guided visit explains individual histories and the wider challenge of human–bear coexistence in Greece. The animals choose where to move, so a sighting is possible rather than guaranteed.

Check the official schedule on the day because opening periods and tour times change. Closed sports or hiking shoes are strongly recommended and the forest approach is not equivalent to a level zoo path. Stay with the guide, keep voices low and never offer food or attempt contact. Ask ARCTUROS directly about accessibility and weather restrictions. Tickets support the organisation's work; photography must follow current rules rather than interrupt animal behaviour.
