Read Xanthi from the modern market uphill, where tobacco fortunes, faiths and domestic architecture meet street by street
The old town deserves a route, not a quick photograph beneath the clock tower. Begin near Antika Square and climb through streets where late nineteenth-century tobacco wealth produced neoclassical mansions beside older Thracian houses. Churches, former inns, Ottoman fountains and the remaining mosque landscape show how several communities shaped the same compact quarter. Municipal cultural routes identify the buildings and keep architectural detail tied to family and commercial history.
Allow two unhurried hours and add a museum rather than trying to enter private homes. Cobbles, steps and steep gradients make some lanes difficult for wheelchairs and pushchairs; the lower streets offer the easiest partial experience. Visit in the morning for quieter lanes or early evening for inhabited neighbourhood life. Park outside the protected core, keep doorways clear and remember that this is residential Xanthi, not an open-air set.
