Old Village and Earthquake Memory Walk

A self-guided walk above the harbour connects the few surviving old buildings with the site of the pre-earthquake village and its memory.

Our take

Trace the surviving school, churches and settlement line to understand what the 1968 earthquake changed

Before 1968, the village climbed the slope in a dense arrangement adapted to island life. The earthquake and subsequent demolition replaced most of it with the lower settlement seen today. Remaining structures, photographs and contours help visitors read that rupture without romanticising unsafe ruins.

Ask at the museum for current local guidance, stay on public paths and never enter unstable buildings. The hillside is exposed and uneven. This is community memory as well as architecture, so avoid photographing homes and residents without permission.
