Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus

The sanctuary of the healing god Asklepios, bringing together the celebrated theatre, ritual and treatment buildings, stadium and archaeological museum.

Our take

A healing sanctuary far larger than its famous theatre

Epidaurus should not be reduced to an acoustics demonstration. The theatre belonged to a broad healing sanctuary where worship, sleep, bathing, performance and athletics formed part of the experience. Walk from the theatre towards the museum, stadium and remains of the Abaton and Tholos to understand the site as a connected institution.

Allow two to three hours and never shout or drop objects in the theatre to test it. Summer performances change access and traffic, so check festival schedules as well as archaeological opening hours. The site works as a day trip from Nafplio, but the coastal villages nearby make a pleasant slower base. Paths are broad in places yet the complete circuit still involves heat and distance.
