A remote Minoan port at the end of eastern Crete
Zakros feels inseparable from the journey to reach it. The palace served a harbour facing the eastern Mediterranean, and finds point towards maritime connections beyond Crete. Courts, storerooms and water features occupy a low site near the sea, framed by a much harsher landscape than Knossos or Malia.
Base in Sitia or stay locally; the mountain roads and Gorge of the Dead make this a full-day destination. Allow at least ninety minutes for the palace and do not attach the return to a flight. Shade is limited, seasonal services vary and walkers need a separate plan for the gorge. The remoteness is the reason to come, not an inconvenience good scheduling can erase.
