A self-guided circuit links carved fountains, slate roofs, churches and defensive-looking mansions across Makrinitsa's steep historic lanes.
Build the route downhill first only if you are prepared to climb back; gradients and polished kalderimi paving are demanding. Carry water, though historic fountains remain part of the story, and never enter private mansion grounds. Fog, rain and winter ice change conditions quickly. A local guide can clarify architecture without turning residents' homes into exhibits.
