Turn the fortress into one coherent route from causeway to citadel instead of disconnected photo stops
Start on the mainland side so the rock's defensive profile is clear, then cross the causeway on foot and pass through the only gate. Follow the main lane to Elkomenos Christos square, detour to the Portelo opening and return for the upper-town ascent. The sequence reveals how access, worship, water storage and defence were organised vertically.
Allow four hours if you visit the archaeological collection and Agia Sophia. There are sustained slopes, polished cobbles and exposed upper paths; this is not a step-free route. Begin early, carry water and postpone the plateau in strong wind or rain. Return before dark unless you know the lanes well. In summer, a separate late-evening lower-town walk is more sensible than stretching one visit through the hottest hours.
