Drive south for a more forgiving beach day than the fortress wall can provide
Ampelakia is the practical swimming choice for travellers based around Monemvasia who need an actual shoreline. The bay near Xifias provides room to settle, and the castle rock remains within easy driving distance. Parts of the shore mix coarse sand with pebbles, so it is more comfortable with water shoes than photographs may suggest.
Summer businesses may provide umbrellas and refreshments, but exact organisation changes by season. Bring shade and water until current services are confirmed. The eastern exposure means wind and chop can build; if the sea is rough, do not assume Portelo will be a safer fallback. Park only in established areas and keep access clear for residents and emergency vehicles.
