Heraklion's long, convenient urban-resort beach
Ammoudara extends west of Heraklion across several kilometres of sand, backed by hotels, beach bars and residential streets. Frequent access points and city buses make it useful without a car, while its length leaves public gaps between the larger concessions.
The north-facing shore catches the summer meltemi and is often windier than southern Crete, an advantage for wind sports but a drawback for flat-water swimming. Observe flags and lifeguard instructions, especially when waves obscure the changing seabed. The eastern skyline includes industrial infrastructure, so choose the central or western section for a more open outlook.
