Chios’s distinctive black-pebble bays offer clear, deep swimming with a raw volcanic setting and only modest services at the shore.
Our take
Black volcanic pebbles and deep blue water near Emporios
Mavra Volia begins just beyond the small port of Emporios and continues through three adjoining coves. Smooth black volcanic pebbles darken both the shore and the water’s colour, while steep bare hills create a stark contrast with southern Chios’s mastic villages.
The water gets deep quickly and there is no lifeguard, so this is better for capable swimmers than for small children learning at the edge. Bring water shoes—the dark stones heat up in direct sun—and leave every pebble where it is. Restaurants are back at Emporios, close enough for lunch but not a reason to arrive without water or shade.
