A remote southern bay beneath Astypalaia's dry hills
Vatses lies beyond Livadi on Astypalaia's southern coast, surrounded by dry slopes and open sea. Its distance from Chora creates a slower day than the town beaches, while coarse sand and pebble keep the water clear.
Ask locally about road condition before driving; washouts and sharp stone can change the journey. Carry water even when the seasonal canteen is expected to open, and leave if wind builds into the bay. Phone signal, lifeguard cover and a quick recovery service should not be assumed.
