Alexandroupoli grew around the railway and port in the nineteenth century, and its lighthouse still marks the broad seafront. The city is relaxed and outward-looking, with seafood restaurants, beach cafés and a regional museum that introduces Thrace's complex cultures.
Its greatest assets lie nearby. The Evros Delta supports pelicans, flamingos and raptors, while Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park protects major birds of prey. Ferries for Samothrace add an island route to an already varied base.
