Why go

Spring-fed parks, wine country and mountain escapes in eastern Macedonia.

Drama combines the waters of Agia Varvara with one of Greece's strongest wine regions and access to caves, forests and winter mountains.

Freshwater springs run through Agia Varvara park at the centre of Drama, creating lakes, mills and shaded paths. The Archaeological Museum and old tobacco warehouses tell the story of a city shaped by trade and population movement.

The surrounding plain has become a leading Greek wine region, with estates producing both international and indigenous varieties. Farther out, Aggitis River Cave, Falakro ski centre and the forests of Elatia create a four-season base.

Practical information

Buses connect Drama with Thessaloniki and Kavala. A car and advance winery appointments are needed for the regional circuit; check mountain conditions in winter.
