Painted harbour houses and a quiet island interior facing Rhodes.
Chalki centres on elegant Emborio, with neoclassical waterfront homes, clear coves and a walk to the abandoned inland capital of Chorio.
Emborio's waterfront is lined with pastel mansions built during the sponge-diving era, giving this small island an unexpectedly grand first impression. A clock tower and church rise behind the harbour, where almost all visitor services are concentrated.
The old village of Chorio lies inland below a Knights-era castle, its abandoned houses and chapels reached on an exposed road. Pondamos provides the easiest sandy beach, while boats and paths reach quieter water.
Practical information
Ferries and day boats connect Chalki with Kamiros Skala and Rhodes Town. There are few vehicles; carry water to Chorio and confirm the last return boat.
