Old Alonnisos climbs a ridge above the sea, with stone lanes, rebuilt houses and evening views shaped by the island's 1965 earthquake.
The old capital was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1965, prompting many residents to move to Patitiri. Careful restoration later brought houses, churches and narrow lanes back to life without erasing the village's stone character.
Chora now has small galleries, tavernas and broad sunset views across the Sporades. Walking downhill towards Megalos Mourtias or through the surrounding countryside reveals a quieter side beyond evening visitors.
Practical information
Buses connect Chora with Patitiri in season. Cars park outside; lanes are steep and polished, so wear secure shoes and keep access clear for residents.
