Karpathos stretches between a lively southern port and the culturally distinct north, where Olympos preserves music, dress and dialect traditions.
Karpathos is one of the Dodecanese's most mountainous islands, with roads crossing high ridges between pine forest and exposed coast. Pigadia provides the main services, while beaches such as Apella, Kyra Panagia and wind-swept Afiartis reveal very different shores.
In the north, Olympos developed in relative isolation and maintains distinctive music, festivals, clothing and speech. These traditions are lived rather than staged, and visitors should approach homes, churches and ceremonies with restraint. The island's scale rewards at least several days.
Practical information
Karpathos has an airport and ferry port. A car is useful, but mountain roads are slow and exposed; boat trips can simplify northern access in settled weather.
