Kastoria occupies a peninsula in Lake Orestiada, with dozens of Byzantine churches, fur-trade mansions, cave archaeology and strong winter atmosphere.
Kastoria's old districts of Doltso and Apozari preserve merchants' mansions built from Balkan trade wealth. More than fifty Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches are scattered through the city, many holding important frescoes.
A lakeside circuit passes fishermen, pelicans and the Dragon's Cave before reaching Mavriotissa Monastery. The fur industry remains visible but ethically contested; museums and architecture offer a richer way to understand the city's economic history.
Practical information
Intercity buses serve Kastoria and a car helps with lakeside villages. Winter fog and ice are common; do not feed birds or approach nesting sites.
