Kos Town places Roman ruins, the Knights' castle, markets, marina life and beaches within a flat, green centre easily explored by bicycle.
An earthquake exposed much of ancient Kos, leaving the Agora, Roman Odeon and Casa Romana woven into the modern street plan. The Castle of Neratzia guards the harbour, while Ottoman mosques and Italian civic buildings record later rulers.
The plane tree associated by tradition with Hippocrates stands near the castle, though the Asklepieion itself lies outside town. Cycle lanes, beaches north of the port and a broad restaurant scene make the city practical as well as historically dense.
Practical information
Ferries arrive near the centre and buses leave for the airport and island villages. Rent bicycles from reputable shops, lock them securely and visit open ruins outside peak heat.
