Why go

A central Greek crossroads below a castle with Thermopylae nearby.

Lamia offers a hilltop castle and archaeological museum, local markets and a practical base for Thermopylae, Oiti and the Spercheios valley.

Lamia's castle commands the route between northern and southern Greece, with an archaeological museum inside its walls. The compact centre below is busy and local, organised around squares, food shops and regional commerce.

Thermopylae lies a short drive away, where the landscape and historical centre explain the famous battle more clearly than the roadside monument alone. Mount Oiti and Gorgopotamos add nature and modern resistance history.

Practical information

Mainline buses and nearby rail serve Lamia. A car is needed for Thermopylae and Oiti; check museum hours and do not enter thermal channels where bathing is prohibited.
