Leros's natural harbours have shaped its history. Lakki became a major Italian naval base and preserves an extraordinary modernist town plan, while tunnels, batteries and museums document the fierce 1943 Battle of Leros.
The older island centres on Platanos, Agia Marina and Pandeli below the Castle of Panagia. Fishing coves, small beaches and a strong food culture soften the military landscape. Leros is rewarding precisely because its stories do not fit a single postcard.
Practical information
The island has a small airport and two ferry ports, Lakki and Agia Marina. Confirm arrival points, rent transport for dispersed sites and never enter unmarked tunnels.
