Why go

Cold springs, stone bridges and the ancient oracle of Trophonius.

Livadeia centres on the river and springs of Krya, with watermills, castle views and an unusual connection to an ancient underworld oracle.

At Krya, cold springs feed the Erkyna River below cliffs and a medieval castle. Stone bridges, plane trees and restored mills make this one of central Greece's most pleasant urban walks.

Ancient Livadeia was famous for the oracle of Trophonius, a mysterious consultation involving descent underground. The city works as a regional stop between Hosios Loukas, Delphi and Parnassos rather than a tourism set piece.

Practical information

Trains stop outside the centre and buses serve Athens. A car helps with Hosios Loukas; river paths can be slippery in winter.
