An active volcanic caldera surrounded by white villages and black rock.
Nisyros offers a walkable volcanic crater field, the villages of Mandraki, Nikia and Emporeios, thermal history and a distinctly dramatic landscape.
The Stefanos crater lies within a broad active caldera where steam vents, sulphur and fractured ground make the island's geology immediate. Nikia overlooks the basin from a bright village square, while near-abandoned Emporeios is slowly returning to life above it.
Mandraki adds the monastery of Panagia Spiliani, ancient Paleokastro walls and shaded lanes. Thermal springs at Loutra recall an earlier spa era. Nisyros is more than a Kos day trip, especially after excursion buses leave.
Practical information
Ferries connect from Kos and the wider Dodecanese. At the crater, stay within marked areas, wear closed shoes and leave immediately if staff warn of heat or gas.
