Olympos was established in a defensible mountain position and remained difficult to reach until recent decades. Houses descend along a ridge towards the sea, windmills line the skyline and women have maintained distinctive dress and craft traditions.
Music, lament, breadmaking and religious festivals are living practices, not performances arranged for tour groups. Visitors should ask before photographing people and understand that the village continues around them after buses leave.
Practical information
The mountain road is paved but long and winding; seasonal boats also reach Diafani. Stay overnight if possible, dress respectfully for churches and seek consent for portraits.
