Peristera

Quiet anchorages and an underwater museum beside Alonnisos.

Peristera is a sparsely inhabited marine-park island known for the classical shipwreck at Alonissos, now accessible through regulated archaeological diving.

A large fifth-century BCE merchant ship sank off Peristera carrying thousands of wine amphorae. The protected site has become Greece's first major underwater museum, allowing certified divers to see the cargo mound in place.

Above water, Peristera has sheltered bays and minimal settlement within the Northern Sporades marine park. Wildlife and archaeological protection shape every visit.

Practical information

Dives must be booked through authorised centres with the required certification. Non-divers can join approved routes; landing and anchoring rules vary by zone.
