Pothia is Kalymnos's capital, where waterfront mansions, maritime museums and sponge shops reveal the island's seafaring identity.
Pothia spreads densely around a deep harbour, its pastel neoclassical homes rising against bare limestone slopes. The Maritime Museum and sponge workshops document the dangerous diving tradition that connected Kalymnos with seas far beyond the Dodecanese.
The town is busy, commercial and genuinely local. Seafood restaurants and pastry shops line the waterfront, while the Archaeological Museum adds sculpture and island history. Climbers often pass through quickly, but Pothia deserves its own half-day.
Practical information
Ferries arrive in the centre and buses serve climbing villages and beaches. Traffic is intense near sailing times; walk the waterfront and use taxis for the airport.
