Saria is a sparsely inhabited island separated from Karpathos by a narrow strait, known for the ruins of Palatia, seabirds and rugged walking.
Saria's southern strait is only a short distance from northern Karpathos, but its cliffs and lack of roads create a remote landscape. At Palatia, stone houses and vaulted structures are often linked to medieval settlement and earlier occupation.
Boat trips may combine swimming with a walk through a gorge or towards the ruins. The island also supports important bird habitat and seasonal pastoral use, so routes should follow local guidance.
Practical information
Excursion boats leave Diafani in settled weather. There are no services; bring water and sturdy footwear, and avoid disturbing livestock, ruins or nesting birds.
