Skyros combines a striking castle town with endemic ponies, pine forest, northern coves and distinctive Carnival and craft traditions.
Skyros sits between the Sporades and Cyclades in both geography and character. Chora cascades below a Byzantine castle and monastery, while the Faltaits Museum documents island dress, woodcarving, ceramics and the exuberant Goat Dance of Carnival.
The small Skyrian horse survives through conservation efforts, and should be seen only at responsible farms. Northern Skyros is greener and settled; the south becomes rugged and largely military, with access restrictions.
Practical information
Flights arrive near Chora and ferries at Linaria. A car helps, but obey southern military closures, book Carnival early and support verified horse-conservation projects.
