Skyros Chora is a steep, maze-like capital with castle views, folk museums, craft workshops and lively squares hidden from the sea.
Chora was built out of sight from raiders, climbing a rock crowned by a Byzantine castle and the Monastery of Agios Georgios. White lanes, flat-roofed houses and carved wooden interiors reflect an island style distinct from the rest of the Sporades.
The Faltaits Museum and archaeological collection give depth to local customs, while Brooke Square remembers the poet Rupert Brooke. In the evening, small squares and tavernas become the social centre.
Practical information
Buses and taxis connect Chora with Linaria and the airport. The centre is steep and pedestrian; use lower parking and check castle access, which can close for restoration.
