A fortified monastery on remote islets south of Zakynthos.
Stamfani is the larger Strofades islet, known for its medieval fortified monastery, migratory birds and highly restricted access.
The Strofades rise low from the Ionian Sea but hold the imposing Monastery of the Transfiguration, built with fortress-like walls against raids. The islets are also an important stop for migratory birds and form part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.
Earthquake damage, conservation work and exposure to weather make this a sensitive site. The resident presence has varied, and landing should never be assumed safe or permitted.
Practical information
There is no scheduled ferry. Only approach with authorised operators and current permission from monastic, archaeological and marine-park authorities.
