Vathy is Ithaca's capital and cultural base, with museums, waterfront restaurants and boats sheltered inside a vast natural harbour.
Vathy was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake while retaining a coherent Ionian character of tiled roofs and pastel façades. The Archaeological Museum and Folklore Museum introduce Ithaca's ancient finds, maritime life and modern island history.
The harbour wraps almost completely around the town, creating long waterfront walks and protected moorings. Roads and boats reach nearby coves, while northern Ithaca requires a separate scenic drive.
Practical information
Most vehicle ferries use Pisaetos rather than central Vathy. Arrange transfers in advance, and reserve waterfront tables and boat hire during peak weeks.
