Volos is a modern port celebrated for tsipouradika, an archaeological museum, Argonaut mythology and direct access to Pelion and the Sporades.
Volos occupies the head of the Pagasetic Gulf near ancient Iolcos, departure point of Jason and the Argonauts in myth. The Archaeological Museum has outstanding Neolithic finds from Sesklo and Dimini, two early farming settlements nearby.
The city's defining ritual is the tsipouradiko: each small carafe arrives with changing seafood meze. A long, flat waterfront and lively neighbourhoods make Volos pleasant in its own right, while ferries leave for the Sporades and roads climb immediately into Pelion.
Practical information
Trains and buses connect Volos with major cities, and ferries use the central port. At tsipouradika, order slowly and do not drive; use buses for nearby Pelion villages.
