An abandoned olive village brought carefully back to life
Kapsaliana was once the olive-mill settlement of Arkadi Monastery. Architect Myron Toupoyannis spent decades restoring its press, houses and lanes, adding new rooms with enough restraint that the whole still reads as a village rather than a themed resort.
Gardens, a pool and a food programme rooted in Cretan produce reward time on site, while Rethymno and Arkadi are easy drives. Rooms vary with the old structures, which is part of their appeal. This is the choice for rural silence, architectural integrity and a slower understanding of Crete.
