Eleven imaginative suites high above the Byzantine city
Mazaraki Guesthouse sits at 600 metres in the green village of Pikoulianika, above the upper entrance to Mystras. Its eleven suites are distributed across four small buildings and styled as individual stories, using colour, local materials and country furniture with far more imagination than a conventional mountain inn. Many include a fireplace, kitchenette or private terrace. Breakfast leans into homemade and regional produce, while the Corfes wine bar introduces bottles from Laconia and elsewhere in Greece. The little outdoor pool is for cooling off and looking across the valley, not for swimming lengths.
This is a rural hideaway, so a car is essential for dinner choices, Sparta and all but the upper archaeological gate. Mountain roads narrow on the final approach, the accommodation is spread over different levels, and travellers with mobility concerns should ask which suite avoids steps. There is no full restaurant, large spa or 24-hour resort infrastructure; even the pool measures only six by three metres. Mazaraki is Mystras’ best small mountain guesthouse for independent travellers who want quiet, character and hosts who care about breakfast and place more than polished formality.
