A handcrafted Lindian hideaway beneath the Acropolis
Melenos feels less like a conventional hotel than a small, beautifully composed piece of Lindos. Its whitewashed and sandstone buildings step down the rock below the Acropolis, and the twelve suites borrow intelligently from local houses: carved timber, painted ceilings, ceramics and smooth pebble mosaics recur without turning the place into a stage set. Private terraces soften the compact rooms, gardens smell of jasmine and lavender, and breakfast on the upper terrace comes with a clear sweep of Lindos Bay. What makes Melenos memorable also asks for a little flexibility. This is a steep, old pedestrian village, with stairs through the hotel, no lift and only limited paid parking away from the easiest parts of the property; speak to reception about luggage before arriving. There is no swimming pool or full spa, and the twelve suites vary in layout, light and outlook, so it is worth choosing a category carefully. The rooftop restaurant and bar are atmospheric rather than an all-day resort operation. For travellers who want to inhabit Lindos rather than look at it from a distance, however, this is the village’s most distinctive heritage stay.
