Six days is enough to understand why Attica is more than Athens with a beach attached. The sequence matters: begin on foot in the historic centre, widen the city through its markets and contemporary neighbourhoods, then move south for two nights by the sea. Cape Sounion becomes the final chapter of the coastline, not a race against sunset traffic.

Before booking

Use two bases only if the Riviera hotel changes the trip. Three central nights and two coastal nights work well; otherwise remain in Athens and make one long coastal day. Match the final night to the next journey. Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio and the airport lie in different directions.

Day 1: Arrive and read the city

Settle into a walkable central neighbourhood and keep the first afternoon light. Cross Syntagma, the National Garden or the lanes below the Acropolis, then choose dinner close to the hotel. The objective is orientation, not a jet-lagged museum marathon.

Day 2: Acropolis and ancient Athens

Enter the Acropolis at the first practical timed slot, continue to the Acropolis Museum and pause through the hottest hours. Later, walk through the Ancient Agora or the streets of Plaka and Anafiotika. Book tickets from official channels and follow heat-related closure notices.

Day 3: Markets, museums and modern Athens

Choose one major collection—the National Archaeological Museum, Benaki or Museum of Cycladic Art—then spend the remainder in a neighbourhood. The central market and old commercial streets reveal the working city; Pangrati, Koukaki or Exarchia supplies a different evening rhythm. One carefully chosen meal matters more than three headline reservations.

Day 4: Move to the Riviera

Transfer after the morning traffic and leave luggage at the coastal hotel. Swim at an organised Vouliagmeni beach or visit Lake Vouliagmeni, following current entry rules. Walk the bay as the heat softens and eat nearby. Do not commute back into central Athens simply because the map makes it look close.

Day 5: The coast to Cape Sounion

Take a car with driver or drive south after breakfast. Stop for one swim—Althea, Legrena or another beach chosen for the day’s wind—then have a simple coastal lunch. Reach the Temple of Poseidon with enough time to explore the sanctuary before the final light. Check official opening hours; sunset does not override the admission schedule.

Day 6: A quiet departure

Use the morning for one last swim or breakfast by the water, then leave for the airport, Lavrio or Piraeus with a route-specific margin. A private boat can replace the beach morning only when the operator’s cancellation policy is clear and no flight depends on its return.

  • Next: one important Athens dinner and the Sounion transport.
  • Keep flexible: the exact swimming cove and any small-boat plan.
