The essential introduction to the sanctuary, games and people of ancient Nemea
Visit the museum before crossing the sanctuary. Architectural fragments, inscriptions, athletic material and finds from the surrounding valley explain how the Nemean Games fitted into the wider Panhellenic circuit. The displays also give the Temple of Zeus and the ancient bathhouse context that is difficult to recover from foundations alone. Allow at least forty-five minutes rather than treating the building as shelter between outdoor sights.
Museum and archaeological-site access are normally managed together, but hours and ticket arrangements can change by season. Check the Ministry of Culture listing before leaving and arrive early in hot weather, because much of the wider site is exposed. Photography restrictions can differ between galleries. The building and displays are the right starting point for families; save the stadium tunnel for afterwards, when its role in the athletes' procession makes sense.
