Poulko Mansion

The restored eighteenth-century Poulko Mansion brings Siatista's merchant wealth into focus through stained glass, carved ceilings, fireplaces and wall paintings.

Our take

Begin inside Geraneia's best-known merchant house, where the restrained facade gives way to painted rooms

Poulko Mansion is the most direct introduction to the private world created by Siatista's travelling merchant families. Its outer walls are defensive and understated; the upper rooms reveal painted decoration, woodcarving, plaster fireplaces and coloured glass. Look for the image of Constantinople and the ships among the decorative motifs, then compare the building with ordinary houses in Geraneia outside.

The regional tourism authority publishes daytime opening and a ticket, but conservation sites can change schedules. Telephone before travelling, particularly on holidays, and allow enough time for the interior rather than arriving just before closing. Floors, thresholds and stairs are historic, so ask directly about accessible parts. Flash, tripods and touching painted surfaces are inappropriate even if no barrier is visible.
