A journey worth taking slowly
The map understates Zagori
Zagori's 46 villages occupy a folded mountain landscape. A place that appears close may sit across a gorge, and the road must travel around it. Base by cluster rather than collecting villages. Two nights in Ioannina, one in central Zagori and two in Papingo give the route shape without daily relocation.
Ioannina supplies lake walks, museums, food and an airport. Leave the car parked for the old town. In central Zagori, use Monodendri or a bridge village as a base for the Oxya viewpoint and short stone-bridge walks. Edges can be unguarded; mist changes visibility quickly.
Papingo is not a quick final stop
The approach to Papingo climbs through repeated hairpins. Arrive in daylight and follow guesthouse parking instructions. A full day allows a walk suited to conditions rather than a rushed photograph beneath the Towers of Astraka.
Mountain judgement
Weather outranks the itinerary. Thunderstorms, snow, ice or fire restrictions can remove an activity. Carry water and layers, download maps and never assume mobile signal. Use a guide for serious gorge or alpine routes.
Driving notes
Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.
