A journey worth taking slowly
Northern Greece at a different scale
This loop exchanges the Aegean for beech forest, high villages and lakes shared by borders and migrating birds. It is strongest in spring and autumn. Winter can be beautiful but turns tyre choice, chains and daylight into central planning questions.
Nymfaio is stone-built and largely pedestrian. Leave the car where instructed and carry only what you need uphill. Wildlife organisations operate visits under their own schedules; reserve where required and treat animal welfare, not entertainment, as the point.
Prespa needs two nights
The Prespa basin is not a quick lake viewpoint. Use local guidance for birdwatching, boat access and protected areas, and bring binoculars rather than approaching wildlife. Roads are quiet but livestock and winter conditions demand care.
Kastoria makes a comfortable finish with a lake circuit, old neighbourhoods and the strongest hotel choice on the route. Walk the centre and drive the peninsula only when it adds something.
Driving notes
Build in time for unplanned stops, refuel before mountain stretches, and avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar rural roads.
