Pair a quiet Arcadian city site with an unconventional modern church, keeping archaeology and architectural experiment distinct
Mantineia rewards visitors who can imagine an ancient city from plan and landscape rather than expecting standing temples. The theatre is the clearest monument; traces of public buildings, the agora and defensive circuit spread across the plain where Mantineian history unfolded. Across the road, Agia Foteini combines references to Classical, Byzantine and other forms in a church designed by Kostas Papatheodorou. Its visual argument is modern, not an archaeological reconstruction.
Give the archaeological site at least an hour and bring sun protection because shade is limited. Check Ministry of Culture hours before driving out, especially in winter, and never climb masonry or cross closed areas. Agia Foteini is an active church: enter quietly, cover shoulders and knees, and do not photograph worshippers. A car or arranged taxi is simplest. Pair the stop with a booked winery visit, not an improvised tasting followed by driving.
