Asklepieion of Kos

The island’s principal ancient sanctuary, rising through monumental terraces dedicated to Asklepios and closely associated with the medical tradition of Kos.

Our take

Healing terraces above the Kos plain

The Asklepieion climbs through three terraces of treatment spaces, stoas, altars and temples, with views across the island towards the Anatolian coast. Its association with Hippocratic medicine needs nuance: the sanctuary developed after Hippocrates’ lifetime, but Kos’s medical tradition shaped its identity and later reputation.

Allow ninety minutes and expect many stairs with little shade. Arrive early, use the interpretive plan and save Kos Town’s scattered ancient remains for another walk. Cycling is possible for strong riders, but heat and the final rise make a car or taxi more practical for many visitors. Verify seasonal bus and ticket information locally.
