Climb above Platanos to understand how Leros's bays, villages and defensive history fit together
The castle is more than Leros's best viewpoint. Its walls occupy a strategic height above Platanos, Agia Marina and Panteli, while the Church of Panagia remains an active place of worship and a strong focus of island life. A small ecclesiastical collection beside the church holds icons and religious objects. From the ramparts, the island's deeply cut bays finally make geographical sense.
A stepped route of roughly five hundred steps rises from Platanos; a road also approaches the summit. Start early because the hill is exposed and shade is limited. Dress for an active church, keep voices low during services and do not treat the altar or icons as exhibits. Stone can become slick after rain, and wind at the top may be much stronger than in Panteli below. Confirm collection hours locally before climbing.
