Chorio and the Castle of the Knights

Abandoned Chorio and its hilltop Knights-era castle form Chalki's essential inland walk, with ruined houses, churches and wide Aegean views.

Our take

Walk through Chalki's former capital before climbing to the castle that once protected island life from raids

Chorio is the necessary counterweight to polished Emborio. The old settlement gathered inland for protection, and its roofless houses, stone walls and chapels still trace a dense community below the castle. Above, fortifications associated with the Knights of Saint John reuse a much older strategic position and open views towards Rhodes and the surrounding sea.

Start early, take water and wear shoes with grip: the final climb is steep, uneven and exposed, with unguarded edges. Do not enter unstable ruins or remove material. Allow time for the village itself instead of treating it only as an approach to a viewpoint.
