A sacred island across the water from Mykonos
Delos is not an optional Mykonos add-on for travellers interested in history; it is the cultural anchor of the archipelago. The sacred birthplace of Apollo and Artemis also became a major trading centre, and the surviving terraces, mosaics, houses and sanctuaries reveal both roles across an entire uninhabited island.
Take the earliest practical boat, carry water, a hat and sun protection, and allow more than a hurried circuit of the Terrace of the Lions. Boat tickets and archaeological admission are separate. Weather can cancel sailings and the museum or individual areas may have changing access, so consult the Ministry of Culture and your operator before departure.
